Welcome to the Charleston Challenge Website. Are you Ready to Charleston in 2013. Want to be part of a World Record Attempt?

Welcome to the Roaring 20s and all that Jazz! Festival.

Following on from the success of last year, we have prepared a fabulous 2013 program for everyone who loves to celebrate the marvellous world of art deco architecture, the beginning of social and fashion freedom, cocktail parties and jazz music.

Nowhere was that decadent era of endless partying more pronounced and fêted than in the Blue Mountains, Lithgow and Oberon region.

It was a time when the honeymooners came up to the Blue Mountains. It was a time when the wealthy arrived in droves in their newly acquired cars to take the fresh air at their holiday properties. It was a time when people were shrugging off the drabness and restriction of the war years.

I personally love the fashion of the 1920s: women were given the freedom to get rid of the corsets from their wardrobe, flatten down their breasts and wear comfortable straight dresses. Short hair was in vogue, and it was a great opportunity to show off those legs that had been hidden away for so long.

I also love the vintage cars with their stunning brass details, wonderful wooden bows which hold the roof up and their great sense of style.

This year’s Roaring 20s and all that Jazz! Festival will feature all the highlights locals and visitors have come to love in the past, with lots of new treats thrown in.

The Blue Mountains Charleston Challenge will be much bigger with many more participants, live musicians and dancing in the street long after the Guinness Book of World Record adjudicators have gone.

New this year will be a murder mystery high tea, Cinema Under the Stars at the Waldorf Leura Gardens, Blue Mountains Radio Plays at the Mountain Heritage Hotel Retreat & Spa, history tours of The Carrington Hotel and a special diesel train from Sydney right to Leura.

I encourage everyone to embrace the spirit, kick up your heels and celebrate the time when Australia’s first tourist destination put on a decade-long party.

Warm regards,
Sandy.
